Stuart A. Kauffman Member of the Santa Fe Institute, Kauffman, author of At Home in the Universe (1995), is one of the world's leading thinkers on self-organization and the science of complexity as applied to biology. Kauffman also consults with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and is on the editorial boards of several prestigious professional publications. He has international patents pending on DNA, RNA, and peptides, polypeptides or proteins by recombinant DNA techniques. Among his many honors, Kauffman is a MacArthur Fellow. Formerly a professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he holds BA degrees from Dartmouth College and Oxford University and received his M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco.
